So, when I got and used an Extreme III 4GB card, I couldn't download the images onto the computer. My old front-of-the-computer multi-port media reader would only handle SD cards up to 2 GB. I just received my SanDisk MicroMate SD/SDHC card reader - and it's absolutely perfect. Those design oversights are the only thing that keeps it from a 5th star, and what do you really expect for what you're paying? Other than that - it does what I need it to do and I'm happy with the purchase. Granted the cap pops on nice and snug, but why take the risk? You run the risk of the cap popping off and losing the reader (which is the important bit) and being left with the cap dangling off your keys. A solid cover for the cap would be preferable.ģ) There's a hole in the corner of the cap to attach it to a keyring - but I wouldn't recommend it. Being clear plastic, I've lost track of the stupid thing a few times already only to find it sitting there in plain sight. It just pops off and you have no choice but to just set it aside until you're done. Nothing a bit of cleaning as regular maintenance couldn't keep up with, though.Ģ) I would have liked to see some way to stow the plastic cap that covers the USB end when the reader is in use.
I would have preferred to have some kind of cover over that. Here's my gripes:ġ) The slot for the SD card is left open and exposed when there's no card inserted, which could allow dust and debris to get into the slot and onto the contacts. That said - It could have been a little more thoughtfully designed. Nice and compact - it tucks away neatly in one of the zipper pouches in my DSLR sling bag. I use it to transfer pictures from my camera's SD card to my laptop. It's an SD card reader that works - what more can you really say about it? I chose this one because I've always trusted the SanDisk name and they have yet to let me down. Other than that (and the caveat that this thing looks like it shouldn't cost more than ten or twelve bucks), the MicroMate is a nicely functional, able performer. On a critical note, the cap also has an opening in its corner that lets you hook it onto a keychain - an asinine design because if the reader detaches from the cap, you'll still have the cap but stand a good chance of losing the device itself. It comes with a transparent plastic cap that protects the USB plug when you remove the cap to plug the MicroMate into your computer, the cap fits on and over the slot on the rear of the MicroMate (and over an SD card that you might have inserted there), so that you don't lose it. The device has a little green light that powers on when the reader is inserted into a USB port.

The MicroMate is an efficient conduit between my A-DATA, Lexar, and Kingston cards on the one hand, and my Macs on the other. Enter the Sandisk MICROMATE, which turns out to have been designed to handle the newer, higher-capacity SDHC cards, as well as earlier generations of SD cards.

My new A-DATA 8GB SDHC card works fine in my Canon SD800 camera, but wouldn't show up on my Mac desktop after I plugged it into my Sandisk MobileMate card reader. I got this to carry around, but guess I'll use this one at home and carry the old one. so I'm thinking that had either been a knockoff or defect.
(Its specs just say 30MB/s read/write.) What is odd is I had bought a black version of this reader from Amazon when they came out that caps at 20 MB/s. The reader is letting me transfer from my SanDisk to the computer at over 100MB/s! I didn't even realize the SD card could be read that fast. so you would easily lose the reader if it came off by using it. One other notable issue is the key-chain loop is located on the cap. I only bought this one because I don't like wire clutter and wanted a faster reader, so that works for me. My front USB ports have more space between them than most, so it works perfectly for home, but it can cause problems with not fitting when I carry it around with me. except it is wide enough to take up 2 of many laptop, front desktop, or possibly even back desktop USB ports.
